Bite rash: patterns, relief and warning signs

Small raised bumps may cluster on exposed skin, and a central puncture mark may be visible. The appearance alone cannot reliably identify the insect because several bites and unrelated skin conditions produce similar marks.

Bumps that arise after time outdoors or sleep in a new setting may support bites, particularly when other household members are affected. Intense night-time itch with marks around finger webs or wrists can occur with scabies, while a scaly ring suggests ringworm rather than a simple bite.

A rash confined to where a product or plant touched the skin can fit contact dermatitis. Widespread spots after starting a medicine need prompt advice because a drug rash may continue even when the first marks resemble bites.

Clean the skin gently and use a cool wrapped compress. Avoid scratching; trimmed nails and a simple fragrance-free moisturiser can protect the skin barrier. A pharmacist can help select an anti-itch product or antihistamine that is suitable alongside your medicines and health conditions.

Wash recently used bedding and clothing if repeated bites are possible, and inspect sleeping areas or pets rather than repeatedly applying insecticide to the skin. Take a clear photograph to record the distribution and any change.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, or a rapidly spreading rash accompanied by severe illness. A blistering or peeling rash involving the mouth, eyes or genitals also needs emergency assessment.

Arrange prompt review for increasing warmth, pain, swelling, pus, red streaks or fever, which can signal infection. Seek advice if new spots keep appearing without a clear exposure, itch prevents sleep, other people at home develop symptoms, or the rash persists despite avoiding the suspected trigger.

Ask which features distinguish bites from scabies, fungal infection or dermatitis, and whether anyone sharing the home needs treatment. Bring a medicine list and explain recent travel, outdoor activity, animal contact, new products, new medicines and whether the rash changes overnight.
