No period with a birth control implant

Periods can stop while using a birth control implant because the progestogen keeps the womb lining thin. This can be an expected bleeding change and does not mean blood is building up inside the womb. The pattern may change again during use, with spotting, irregular bleeding, or a return of periods.

The implant releases a progestogen that prevents ovulation and changes the womb lining and cervical mucus. With little lining to shed, menstrual bleeding may become lighter or stop. Bleeding patterns do not show whether the implant is working, so the absence or presence of a period cannot be used to judge contraceptive protection.

Pregnancy is uncommon when an implant is correctly placed and still within its approved use period, but no contraceptive method removes every possibility. Protection can be affected if replacement is overdue or by certain medicines and herbal products. Other causes of absent periods are considered according to age, symptoms, medical history, and whether the implant timing is uncertain.

Check the date the implant was fitted and when replacement is due. Take a home pregnancy test if the implant is overdue, you cannot feel it where it was placed, you used medicines that can interfere with it, or you have pregnancy symptoms. If a test is negative but concern remains, repeat it according to the test instructions or arrange a clinical review.

Do not try to remove or reposition the implant yourself. A clinician can confirm its location and review interacting medicines. Keep track of new pelvic pain, unusual discharge, breast symptoms, headaches, hot flushes, or other changes, as this context helps distinguish an implant effect from a separate health issue.

Seek urgent care for a positive pregnancy test with one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting, or bleeding, because a pregnancy outside the womb must be excluded. Get prompt help for severe abdominal pain, very heavy bleeding with weakness or breathlessness, signs of infection around the implant, or an arm that becomes swollen, numb, cold, or unusually painful.

Ask whether your implant remains in date, whether any prescription or non-prescription medicine affects it, and whether your symptoms warrant a pregnancy test or another check. If the bleeding pattern is unacceptable, discuss ways to manage it and whether a different contraceptive would better suit you.
