Birla plaster of Paris: what patients should know

The product name does not determine whether it is suitable for a particular patient. Safe casting depends on the clinical reason, padding, molding, fit and follow-up plan.

Clinicians wet plaster bandage, apply it over protective padding and shape it while it sets. Once firm, the shell restricts selected movement and helps maintain alignment. Plaster can be molded closely, but it is relatively heavy and can soften or break if it becomes wet.

A cast may be complete around a limb or applied as a splint with room for early swelling. Fracture casting and clubfoot casting have different goals, so placement, molding and review schedules are chosen for the individual situation.

Keep the cast dry and protect it during washing. While it finishes hardening, support it with open palms rather than fingertips, which may leave dents. Elevate the limb as instructed when swelling is expected, and move uncovered fingers or toes if your care team has said this is safe.

Do not trim the cast, pull out padding, apply powder inside it or insert objects to scratch. Contact the casting service if it cracks, becomes soft, smells unusually unpleasant, rubs the skin, feels too loose, or gets soaked. Attend the planned checks even when the limb feels comfortable.

Obtain urgent medical help if pain becomes severe or keeps increasing despite elevation and prescribed pain relief, or if exposed fingers or toes become numb, weak, cold, pale or blue. Rapidly increasing swelling, inability to move the exposed digits, burning beneath the cast, drainage, fever, or a cast that feels dangerously tight also requires prompt review.

Confirm whether weight bearing is allowed, how to use any sling or walking aid, when the cast should be checked, and whom to contact if it is damaged. Ask what level of swelling is expected and which changes in skin colour, sensation or movement should send you for urgent care.
