Skin cancer biopsy: procedure, results, and aftercare

Short answer

A skin biopsy removes part or all of a suspicious area so a pathologist can determine whether cancer cells are present.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Sample
The clinician may take a superficial piece, a small core, or the full visible area.
Laboratory review
A pathologist examines the cells and tissue arrangement under a microscope.
Result discussion
The report should be explained together with the next recommended action.

The short answer

The sampling method depends on the area's size, depth, position, and appearance. Local anaesthetic is often used, and some wounds need stitches while others heal beneath a dressing.

What the pathology report explains

The report can name the skin condition, identify a cancer type when present, and describe features that influence the next step. If the entire visible area was removed, the report may also comment on whether abnormal cells reach a sampled edge.

A positive edge does not describe cancer elsewhere in the body. It means abnormal cells extend to an edge of that specimen, so the clinician considers whether more local tissue should be removed.

Before and after the biopsy

Tell the clinician about allergies, medicines, bleeding problems, implanted devices, and previous reactions to local anaesthetic. Do not change medicines on your own; ask for specific instructions if you take a medicine that affects clotting.

Keep the wound clean and covered as directed. If stitches were placed, confirm when and where they should be removed. Limit stretching, swimming, or strenuous activity if these could pull the wound open, and protect the healing site from rubbing.

Signs that need medical attention

Call the clinic for redness that keeps spreading, warmth, pus, fever, worsening pain, wound separation, or swelling that is increasing rather than settling.

Apply the pressure method provided by your clinician if the site bleeds. Obtain urgent care when bleeding continues despite that pressure, or if you develop breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, or another severe reaction.

Useful questions at your appointment

Ask which biopsy technique is suitable, whether the whole visible area will be removed, how to manage the dressing, when to expect the report, and whom to contact for results. If cancer is found, request a plain-language explanation of the type, specimen edges, further tests, and treatment options.

Questions people ask

Can appearance alone confirm skin cancer?

Clinical examination can identify an area that needs investigation, but microscopic assessment of sampled tissue provides the diagnosis when a biopsy is required.

Will a skin biopsy leave a scar?

Any procedure that breaks the skin can leave a mark. Its appearance varies with the technique, body site, wound care, and personal healing.

What if the biopsy does not show cancer?

Your clinician compares the report with the original skin finding. If they do not fit together or the area keeps changing, further assessment or another sample may be considered.
