Biopsy of a kidney mass

The radiology team locates the mass with imaging, numbs the skin and biopsy path, and advances a needle through the back or side. The tissue goes to a pathologist. Not every kidney mass needs sampling: the decision depends on its imaging appearance, the person's health, and whether the result could change management.

Microscopic examination can identify benign tissue, a cancer type, or a sample that is not diagnostic. A non-diagnostic result means the collected material did not settle the question; it is not the same as confirmation that the mass is harmless. The team compares pathology with the scans before recommending surveillance, repeat sampling, local treatment, or surgery.

Further laboratory analysis may be useful when the cell type is uncertain. Treatment is not selected from a single phrase in the report: the location and extent of the mass, kidney function, symptoms, and overall fitness also shape the plan.

Give the team a complete medicine list and mention blood thinners, bleeding disorders, allergies, pregnancy, kidney problems, and previous reactions to sedation or contrast material. Follow the specific eating, drinking, and medicine instructions supplied by the unit; do not independently stop an anticoagulant.

Plan for observation after the sample and arrange a ride if sedation will be used. At home, limit strenuous activity for the period advised, keep the dressing clean, and use only the pain medicine recommended for you. Mild soreness at the needle site can occur, but it should trend toward improvement.

Contact the procedure team urgently for increasing pain in the back, side, or abdomen; persistent or heavy blood in the urine; difficulty passing urine; dizziness; fever; or worsening redness, swelling, or discharge at the needle site. Seek emergency care for fainting, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening pain, as these can signal significant bleeding or another acute problem.

Consider asking why a biopsy is preferable to imaging follow-up or surgery in your case, which imaging method will guide it, and how the result could alter the plan. Clarify medicine adjustments, sedation, travel home, activity limits, the route for receiving pathology, and the next step if the sample is non-diagnostic.
