Blood biopsy and liquid biopsy explained

A liquid biopsy examines material released by tumour cells into the bloodstream, such as fragments of genetic material. It begins with an ordinary blood draw and does not remove a solid piece of a tumour. A bone marrow biopsy is a different procedure that collects marrow, usually from the back of the pelvic bone.

A liquid biopsy may look for a tumour-related genetic change when tissue is difficult to obtain, or it may help guide a treatment decision in selected cancers. A result that finds no tumour signal does not by itself exclude cancer because the bloodstream may contain too little detectable material.

Blood counts and blood-film tests examine the blood cells themselves. When clinicians need to assess how blood cells are being produced, marrow sampling can show the types, appearance, and arrangement of cells in their source tissue. The test requested should therefore be named clearly rather than grouped under the informal phrase blood biopsy.

Check the appointment letter to see whether you are having a blood draw or bone marrow sampling. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, previous fainting during blood tests, and any bleeding condition. Eating restrictions are not automatic; follow only the instructions issued for your particular tests.

After a routine blood draw, keep pressure on the puncture site until bleeding has stopped. Following marrow sampling, leave the dressing in place as instructed, keep the site clean, and follow the team's advice about bathing and physical activity. Arrange transport if sedation is planned.

Ask for prompt medical advice if a puncture site keeps bleeding after sustained pressure, develops expanding swelling, or becomes increasingly painful, warm, red, or wet with discharge. Fever or marked weakness after an invasive sample also deserves assessment. Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, collapse, confusion, or uncontrolled bleeding.

Find out the exact name of the test, whether it samples circulating material or bone marrow, and what clinical question it is intended to answer. You can also ask whether tissue testing is still needed, how regular medicines should be handled, when results are expected, and who will interpret an uncertain or negative finding.
