Breast needle biopsy: what to expect

The clinician usually guides the needle with ultrasound, mammography, or MRI, depending on where the finding is clearest. Local anaesthetic numbs the skin and deeper tissue. A fine needle collects cells, while a core needle takes narrow pieces of tissue that preserve more structural detail.

A pathologist examines the sample to distinguish non-cancerous changes, atypical cells, and cancer. If cancer is present, laboratory testing may describe its type and biological features that help the care team plan treatment. Occasionally, the sample does not contain enough representative tissue or does not explain the imaging finding; another biopsy or a surgical sample may then be discussed.

A small marker clip may be placed at the sampled site so it can be found on later images. The clip is not the biopsy result and normally remains in the breast unless the area is removed during a later procedure.

Tell the biopsy team about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, allergies, pregnancy, and any implanted device. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the clinician responsible for it gives clear instructions. Wear a supportive bra and clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up.

After sampling, follow the dressing instructions, use a wrapped cold pack if advised, and avoid strenuous upper-body activity for the period given by your team. Bruising, tenderness, and a small firm area can occur. Keep the result appointment even if the breast feels normal afterward.

Contact the clinical team promptly if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, swelling is rapidly increasing, pain is worsening rather than settling, or the site becomes increasingly red, hot, or drains fluid. Fever or feeling acutely unwell also needs medical advice. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, fainting, or other severe sudden symptoms.

Ask which imaging method will guide the needle, whether a fine-needle or core biopsy is planned, and whether a marker clip will be placed. Confirm how to manage regular medicines, when the dressing can come off, who will explain the pathology report, and what happens if the tissue result does not match the scan.
