Biopsy for prostate cancer

It is considered alongside prostate-specific antigen results, examination findings and imaging. An abnormal blood test or scan raises a question; the tissue examination provides the diagnosis.

Samples are commonly taken with a needle guided by ultrasound, either through the skin between the scrotum and anus or through the rectum. MRI findings may direct sampling toward a suspicious area while systematic samples check other parts of the gland. The clinical team selects the route and anaesthetic.

The report states whether cancer is present and describes how the tumour cells look under the microscope. This information, together with scans, blood tests, health and preferences, helps the specialist discuss monitoring or treatment. A negative result can be reassuring, but persistent concern may lead to continued testing because a needle samples only parts of the prostate.

Report medicines that affect clotting, allergies, diabetes, artificial heart valves and previous infections. Follow the clinic's directions about antibiotics, bowel preparation, food, drink and regular medicines. Arrange a lift home if the planned anaesthetic or sedation makes driving unsafe.

Temporary soreness and some blood in urine, bowel motions or semen may follow the procedure. Drink fluids if your team permits, avoid strenuous activity for the advised period, and use the exact contact instructions supplied by the biopsy service.

Seek urgent assessment for fever with chills or shaking, feeling severely unwell, confusion, inability to pass urine, heavy or continuing bleeding, or large blood clots. Infection after a prostate biopsy can worsen quickly, while urinary blockage may require drainage.

Contact the clinic for increasing pain, burning urination that is not settling, or bleeding that exceeds the pattern described in your discharge information. Mention the recent biopsy whenever another clinician assesses you.

Ask why biopsy is recommended now, whether MRI will target the samples, which route and pain relief are planned, and how infection risk is managed. Find out how the report will describe any cancer, when you will receive it, and what follow-up is appropriate if no malignant cells are identified.
