What should you know about a Bionet 12-channel ECG machine?

A Bionet 12-channel ECG machine records several views of the heart’s electrical activity at the same time. A clinician uses the resulting tracing to assess rate, rhythm, and conduction, and to look for patterns that may need further evaluation. The device only records signals detected by electrodes; it does not stimulate the heart.

The electrodes placed on the chest and limbs allow the machine to calculate different electrical views, often called leads. “Twelve-channel” describes the set of views produced, rather than twelve separate procedures. Each view can highlight electrical activity from a different direction. A tracing may be requested for palpitations, chest discomfort, fainting, breathlessness, a medical examination, or follow-up of a known heart condition. Its meaning depends on your history, examination, medicines, and the quality of the recording.

The technician may ask you to uncover the electrode areas and lie still while the skin is prepared. Tell them if you have sensitive skin, a wound, or difficulty remaining flat. Avoid lotion on the areas beforehand because it can affect adhesion. Keep your muscles relaxed, do not speak during the brief recording, and mention if symptoms occur. Bring a list of medicines and relevant previous heart test results when attending a clinical appointment.

Call for urgent medical help for new or severe chest pain or pressure, severe breathlessness, collapse, fainting, or a heartbeat that is fast or irregular with dizziness. Symptoms that spread to the arm, jaw, neck, or back also need prompt assessment. An ECG can support emergency decision-making, but arranging a device-based test should never postpone care for alarming symptoms.
