What should you know about a Biomedics ECG machine?

A Biomedics ECG machine records the heart’s electrical signals through skin electrodes during a short, non-invasive test. The device displays and prints waveforms that help a clinician assess heart rate, rhythm, and the timing of electrical conduction. It does not send electricity into your body.

Small adhesive electrodes are placed on the chest and usually on the limbs. Wires carry the detected signals to the machine, which creates multiple views of one heartbeat. Movement, talking, loose electrodes, or skin products can add interference, so the tracing may need repeating. An ECG can provide useful information when there are palpitations, chest discomfort, fainting, breathlessness, or a suspected rhythm problem, but a tracing is interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and lower limbs, and tell the technician about any skin sensitivity or difficulty lying flat. Avoid applying lotion or oily products to electrode areas on the day of the test. During recording, relax, breathe normally, keep still, and answer questions about symptoms or medicines. The test itself does not diagnose every cause of chest symptoms, and a normal tracing does not automatically explain intermittent symptoms; your clinician may discuss monitoring or other tests.

Do not wait for an ECG appointment if chest pressure or pain is severe, new, or persistent, especially with sweating, nausea, marked breathlessness, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Seek urgent medical help for a fast or irregular heartbeat with dizziness, collapse, or severe weakness. An ECG machine is a testing tool; it should not delay emergency assessment when symptoms are concerning.

Ask what the tracing shows, whether your symptoms were present during recording, and whether the result suggests a rhythm or conduction concern. You can also ask whether you need a longer monitor, blood tests, or another form of cardiac assessment, and when to seek help if the symptoms return.
