Biomechanics and running gait analysis

Short answer
Running gait analysis examines how your body moves under load and connects those findings with your symptoms and goals.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main purpose
- To relate running movement and loading to a specific symptom or performance goal.
- Possible tools
- Video, motion capture and pressure measurement can supplement clinical observation.
- Limit
- Movement data alone cannot establish the cause of an injury.
The short answer
A useful assessment combines your history, physical examination and observation of running. Video, motion sensors or force-measuring equipment may add detail, but a single movement pattern does not by itself diagnose an injury or prove its cause.
What the assessment examines
The clinician may compare cadence, stride, foot contact, trunk position, pelvic control and the alignment of the hip, knee and ankle. They may also observe how movement changes with speed, fatigue, footwear or an incline. Pressure equipment can show where and when force passes through the foot, while motion capture can track joint movement.
Results are interpreted in context. Asymmetry can be harmless, and textbook-looking form can still accompany pain. The most useful findings are repeatable, match the clinical examination and lead to a practical trial such as strength work, load adjustment, a cue or a footwear change.
How to get useful results
Bring the shoes you normally run in, comfortable clothing, and any training notes that show when discomfort begins. Explain recent changes in distance, pace, surface, recovery, strength training and footwear. Mention previous injuries even if they are currently quiet.
Agree on the question before testing: reducing pain, returning after injury, improving tolerance or checking an orthotic. Ask to see the relevant footage and request a small set of measurable actions. A planned reassessment can show whether the change helps symptoms and function rather than merely altering appearance.
When running pain needs medical care
Stop running and arrange clinical assessment when pain changes your gait, persists at rest, repeatedly worsens with training, or is accompanied by focal bone tenderness, marked swelling, weakness or numbness. Sudden inability to bear weight, a visibly deformed joint, a cold or pale foot, or severe pain after trauma needs urgent care.
Gait testing should not delay evaluation of a possible fracture, acute tendon rupture or nerve problem. A clinician can first decide whether examination or imaging is needed and when running assessment is safe to resume.
Questions before booking
Ask who interprets the test, whether the assessment includes a physical examination, which running speeds will be observed and how recommendations will be checked. If orthotics are proposed, clarify which finding they address and whether a temporary trial is possible before a longer-term device is made.

Questions people ask
Do I need to be injured to have running gait analysis?
An injury is not required. The assessment can answer a clear question about comfort, training tolerance, return to running or equipment, although findings should still be tied to your goals.
Will gait analysis tell me which shoes to buy?
It may inform footwear choices, but comfort, fit, training load and your response during a trial matter alongside the observed movement pattern.
Does every asymmetry need correction?
Correction is not automatically needed. The clinician should judge whether an asymmetry is repeatable, linked to symptoms and realistically modifiable before recommending a change.
