A trained provider passes a handpiece over the skin to remove superficial dead cells. The name may refer to equipment used by a clinic, so the exact tip, suction, settings, and treatment plan can vary.

Surface exfoliation can temporarily improve roughness and help skin look brighter. It does not rebuild lost tissue, erase deep acne scars, or treat the cause of an active rash. Results also differ from those of a chemical peel, which uses an applied solution rather than mechanical abrasion.

Technique matters: excessive suction or repeated passes may irritate skin and can leave marks, particularly when the skin is already inflamed or prone to pigment changes.

Tell the provider about prescription acne medicines, retinoids, recent procedures, cold sores, easy bruising, and products that sting or peel your skin. Treatment should be postponed over sunburn, open wounds, infection, or an active inflammatory flare.

Afterward, use a gentle cleanser, plain moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sun protection. Avoid picking, scrubs, waxing, and strong exfoliating products until sensitivity settles. Mild tightness, tenderness, or redness can occur; the provider should explain what is expected for the settings used.

Contact the treating clinic if redness or discomfort is worsening rather than settling, or if blisters, crusting, marked swelling, persistent darkening, or pale patches appear. Obtain prompt medical care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, fever, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or eye symptoms.

Ask which microdermabrasion device and tip will be used, who performs the procedure, how settings are adjusted for your skin tone and sensitivity, and what endpoint the provider expects. Clarify whether another approach better matches your concern and which products or treatments should be paused beforehand.
