What should you know about bio rad flow cytometry?

Short answer

Bio-Rad flow cytometry is laboratory technology that identifies and measures cell features to support diagnosis, classification and treatment monitoring.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Where it happens
In a laboratory, using cells from a collected sample.
What it examines
Selected features and marker patterns on or within cells.
Interpretation
Combined with other laboratory results and clinical information.

Direct answer

The instrument is used by laboratory teams rather than directly on a patient. Cells from blood, bone marrow or another collected sample are labelled with markers and pass individually through a laser beam, allowing their patterns to be recorded.

How the test adds information

Different cells carry characteristic proteins on their surface or inside them. Flow cytometry detects selected markers and groups cells according to the resulting pattern. In blood cancers, this can help distinguish cell populations that may look similar under a microscope. Results are interpreted alongside the blood count, cell appearance, clinical findings and sometimes genetic or molecular tests; the instrument output is not a diagnosis by itself.

What you need to do

Preparation depends on how the sample is obtained, not on the flow cytometer. For a blood draw, follow the instructions supplied by the clinic. If bone marrow sampling is planned, tell the team about medicines, allergies and previous problems with local anaesthetic or sedation. After collection, follow the wound-care advice and keep the contact details provided by the unit.

When to contact the care team

Flow cytometry itself does not create symptoms because it is performed on a sample. Any aftercare concerns relate to the collection procedure. Contact the clinical team if a sampling site has persistent bleeding, worsening pain, spreading redness, increasing swelling or discharge, or if you develop fever and feel unwell. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting or a serious allergic reaction after a procedure.

Questions about your result

You can ask which sample was analysed, what cell population the laboratory was looking for, whether the findings were clear, and which other results must be considered. Also ask who will explain the combined interpretation and whether the result changes the next diagnostic or treatment decision.

Questions people ask

Does flow cytometry expose me to the laser?

No. The laser acts on cells inside the laboratory instrument after the sample has been collected.

Is flow cytometry the same as a bone marrow biopsy?

No. A bone marrow biopsy is a sample-collection procedure; flow cytometry is one laboratory method that may be used to analyse cells from that sample.

Can one flow cytometry result confirm everything about a blood disorder?

Usually not. The care team integrates the marker pattern with cell appearance, blood tests, symptoms and any other relevant investigations.
