Despite the name, this may not use a motorised microneedling pen. Some protocols massage microscopic sponge-derived spicules into the skin to create a prickling sensation and visible shedding. Product composition and treatment strength can vary, making a detailed consultation essential.

Conventional microneedling uses sterile needles at controlled depths to create channels in the skin. A spicule treatment instead relies on tiny pointed particles within a topical preparation. RF microneedling also delivers radiofrequency energy and is a separate procedure with different precautions.

Clinics may offer the treatment for texture, uneven tone or signs of sun damage. Darker skin tones and melasma-prone skin can develop unwanted pigment after irritation, so treatment intensity and post-treatment sun protection deserve particular attention.
