What should you know about bilobar liver metastases?

The word bilobar describes location; it does not by itself show whether treatment can remove or control the deposits. A specialist team considers the number, size and position of lesions, liver function, disease elsewhere in the body and how the cancer has responded to treatment.

The liver has right and left lobes. Metastases in both are secondary cancers: the cells began in another organ and travelled to the liver. They are treated according to the original cancer type rather than as a new primary liver cancer.

Scans help map each deposit and its relationship to major blood vessels and bile ducts. Blood tests show how well the liver is working. These details help the team decide whether local treatment, whole-body treatment or a planned combination is appropriate.

Attend the recommended imaging and blood-test appointments, and bring a current medicines list. Your case may be discussed by liver surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists and other specialists. Possible approaches include chemotherapy, removal of selected liver tissue, tumour ablation or symptom-focused care.

Do not stop cancer medicines or supplements without checking with the treating team. Tell them about appetite loss, weight change, pain and how active you are, because these details influence supportive care and treatment tolerance.

Contact your cancer team promptly for new yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, increasing abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, fever or pain that is worsening. Seek urgent help for confusion, severe breathlessness, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding or sudden intense abdominal pain.

If you are receiving anticancer treatment, follow the team's instructions for fever or possible infection even if you otherwise feel well.

Ask where the deposits sit, whether disease is present outside the liver, what the treatment aims to achieve, and which specialists reviewed the scans. You can also ask whether treatment is intended to shrink deposits before a local procedure and how liver function will be monitored.
