What should you know about bile salt test in urine?

Bile is made by the liver and normally travels through bile ducts into the intestine. When bile flow is altered, some bile-related substances can appear in urine. A result by itself does not identify a single condition. Your clinician may consider yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, itching, abdominal discomfort, fever, medicines and recent illness. They may also arrange blood tests or imaging to assess the liver, gallbladder and ducts. Urinary symptoms can point to a separate issue such as a Urinary Tract Infection or Kidney Infection, rather than explaining a bile-related finding.

Follow the collection instructions carefully: use the requested container, avoid contaminating the sample, and return it within the stated time. Ask whether you need to avoid food, exercise or particular medicines; do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. The result may be reviewed with a broader Urine Test, liver blood tests or imaging.
