An examination helps distinguish nerve-root irritation from problems involving the spinal cord, peripheral nerves, shoulders, or other tissues. Depending on the findings, the clinician may arrange neck imaging or tests of nerve and muscle function.

Book a medical assessment, especially if numbness or weakness is new, persistent, or worsening. Until assessed, avoid forceful neck manipulation and activities that clearly intensify arm symptoms. Keep the neck in comfortable positions, change posture regularly, and note which fingers are affected and whether grip or fine hand tasks have changed.
