What should you know about bilat flank pain?

The flanks are the areas between the ribs and hips on either side of the spine. Pain may be aching, sharp, cramping, or tender when you move. A kidney infection often presents with flank pain alongside fever, chills, nausea, or urinary symptoms. Kidney stones can present with severe waves of pain that travel toward the groin. A urinary tract infection may cause burning or frequent urination, although flank pain can signal that infection has moved higher. Muscle strain is another possibility, especially after lifting, coughing, or unusual activity. Pain on both sides does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the pain persists, recurs, or comes with urinary changes. Note when it began, whether it moves, and whether movement or pressing changes it. Record fever, vomiting, blood in the urine, burning, urgency, and any recent injury. Drink normally unless a clinician has advised fluid restriction; do not force large amounts if you are vomiting or have kidney disease. A clinician may examine your abdomen and back and test urine before deciding whether further testing is needed.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with flank pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, faintness, blood in the urine, or difficulty passing urine. Get emergency help for collapse, severe weakness, or trouble breathing. These signs can accompany infection, obstruction, or another condition needing prompt treatment.
