What should you know about big red bumps on skin?

Check whether the bumps itch, hurt, feel hot, blister, scale, or blanch when pressed. New fever, rapidly extending redness, breathing difficulty, or involvement of the eyes or mouth calls for urgent assessment.

Contact dermatitis commonly presents with itchy redness where the skin met a trigger. Heat rash tends to affect sweaty, covered areas with clusters of prickly bumps. Psoriasis can present with clearly edged, thickened or scaly patches rather than isolated smooth bumps.

Rosacea mainly presents with persistent or recurring facial redness and may include inflamed bumps. Cellulitis usually presents as an enlarging area of painful, warm, swollen skin; that pattern needs prompt clinical care, especially when accompanied by fever.

Recent sun exposure, a new cosmetic, medication timing, illness, and whether anyone nearby has similar symptoms are all useful clues, but appearance alone may not establish the cause.

Move to a cool setting, wear loose clothing, and clean the skin with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free product. Stop recently introduced creams or cosmetics. Resist scratching and avoid exfoliating, waxing, or treating unexplained bumps with several active products at once.

Record where the eruption began and whether new areas appear. Photograph it in consistent lighting and list recent skin products, medicines, sun exposure, travel, and close contacts. These details can make a remote or in-person review more useful.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, or a rash with purple spots that do not fade under pressure. Urgent assessment is also warranted for blistering or peeling skin, severe pain, eye involvement, or sores inside the mouth.

Contact a clinician promptly when redness expands, the skin becomes hot and swollen, pus appears, fever develops, or the eruption follows a newly started medicine. Persistent, recurrent, or unexplained bumps also merit a planned skin examination.

Ask which features support irritation, inflammation, or infection; whether any product should be stopped; and which treatment is safe for the affected body site. If redness is persistent rather than actively inflamed, ask whether a procedure such as IPL is appropriate only after the diagnosis is clear.
