What should you know about bi rabies vaccine?

Rabies is a serious infection that can pass through the saliva of an infected mammal, commonly through a bite or scratch. The vaccine trains the immune system to recognise the virus. A person who has never completed rabies vaccination may need a different post-exposure plan from someone vaccinated previously.

A possible exposure needs prompt assessment even when the wound looks small. The animal, the contact, the skin break and local public-health advice all affect the plan. The vaccine is not a substitute for washing the wound thoroughly.

Wash a bite or scratch with soap and running water as soon as possible, then seek urgent medical advice. Do not wait for symptoms. A clinician may recommend vaccine doses and, for some exposures, rabies immunoglobulin placed around the wound. Follow the appointment schedule and tell the clinician about any earlier rabies doses, pregnancy, immune conditions or medicines.

For future protection, discuss rabies vaccination before travel or work involving animals. Pre-exposure vaccination can simplify care after a later exposure, but a bite still requires medical assessment.

Seek urgent care immediately after a bite, scratch, or saliva contact with broken skin or the eyes or mouth from a mammal that could carry rabies. Go promptly if the wound is deep, bleeding, on the face or hand, or difficult to clean. Emergency symptoms such as trouble swallowing, confusion, unusual agitation or weakness need emergency services.

Ask which vaccine schedule fits the contact, whether immunoglobulin is needed, how the wound should be dressed, and what to do if a scheduled dose is delayed.
