Bevacizumab targeted therapy

Tumours need a blood supply to receive oxygen and nutrients. Bevacizumab is a monoclonal antibody that binds VEGF and reduces signals that promote new blood-vessel growth. It may be combined with chemotherapy or other anticancer medicines, depending on the cancer type, previous treatment and the person's general health.

Calling it targeted therapy describes its biological target; it does not mean that effects are confined to tumour tissue. VEGF is also involved in normal blood-vessel function and healing, which is why blood pressure, urine protein, bleeding, clotting and wound timing matter during treatment.

Tell the oncology team about high blood pressure, heart or blood-vessel problems, bleeding or clotting history, kidney concerns, medicines that affect clotting, and any operation or wound. Attend blood-pressure, urine and blood checks as scheduled. Report planned surgery or dental procedures early because the oncology and surgical teams may need to coordinate treatment around healing.

Contact the oncology service urgently for unusual bleeding, a wound that opens, severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or a new severe headache. Seek emergency care for chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, coughing or vomiting blood, weakness on one side, difficulty speaking, seizures, confusion, fainting, or swelling and pain in one leg.

Ask why bevacizumab is being recommended for your cancer, whether it will be combined with another medicine, and how response will be assessed. Clarify which blood-pressure readings or urine findings should trigger a call, whom to contact after hours, and how future procedures could affect the infusion schedule.
