Beta cells in type 2 diabetes

Beta cells are insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Early in type 2 diabetes, they may compensate for insulin resistance by releasing more insulin. Over time, that response can become less effective, so glucose control becomes harder. This does not mean a person has caused the condition or that every case follows the same course. Prediabetes may occur while the body is beginning to lose this balance.

Use prescribed medicines consistently and attend reviews even when you feel well, because glucose changes may have no obvious symptoms. Ask for a plan covering meals, movement, weight goals if relevant, and home monitoring. Treatment can be adjusted as insulin sensitivity and beta cell output change. Regular foot checks and attention to blood pressure and cholesterol help lower risks linked with diabetes, including nerve, kidney, artery, and stroke problems.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, severe dehydration, difficult breathing, or extreme drowsiness. If you use insulin or certain glucose-lowering medicines, sweating, trembling, rapid heartbeat, blurred vision, or sudden confusion may be hypoglycaemia and needs prompt treatment according to your care plan. A new one-sided weakness or speech difficulty is an emergency.
