Beta blockers and shortness of breath

Beta blockers slow the heart and can narrow the airways in susceptible people, particularly with some non-selective medicines. Breathlessness may instead reflect the condition being treated, such as angina or atrial fibrillation, or a lung problem such as asthma, COPD, acute bronchitis, or bronchiectasis. Anaemia can also reduce oxygen delivery and cause exertional breathlessness.

Do not stop or skip the beta blocker without speaking with the prescriber. Note when symptoms occur, whether they follow a dose, and whether wheezing, cough, chest discomfort, palpitations, fever, or ankle swelling is present. A clinician may review the medicine, listen to your chest, check oxygen level and heart rhythm, and decide whether tests or a different treatment are needed.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, fainting, chest pressure, or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat. Sudden breathlessness with wheezing or hives may signal anaphylaxis. Seek same-day assessment for new breathlessness at rest, marked chest tightness, or symptoms that prevent normal activity.
