What should you know about Bepanthen for perioral dermatitis?

Because products sold under the Bepanthen name differ, check the exact formulation. Avoid repeatedly layering a heavy ointment around the mouth unless a clinician has recommended it for your skin.

Perioral dermatitis commonly presents with clusters of small red or skin-coloured bumps around the mouth and may also involve the nose or eyes. Burning, tightness, dryness and skin sensitivity can accompany the bumps. The narrow border beside the lips may remain clear.

Rich facial products and topical corticosteroids can aggravate or mask the eruption. Stopping a steroid can also be followed by a temporary flare, so get medical guidance rather than restarting it without advice.

Pause non-essential cosmetics, facial oils, scrubs and strongly fragranced products. Wash gently with lukewarm water or a mild cleanser, avoid rubbing, and use only a light moisturiser if the skin needs one. Do not squeeze the bumps.

A clinician may prescribe topical or oral treatment after confirming the diagnosis. Mention any steroid cream, nasal spray or inhaler you use; do not stop a prescribed inhaled or nasal medicine without discussing how to use it safely.

Book a dermatology visit when the eruption persists, spreads toward the eyes, repeatedly returns or worsens after product changes. Obtain urgent care for marked eye pain, visual changes, significant facial swelling, breathing difficulty or rapidly spreading blistering.

Ask whether the pattern is perioral dermatitis rather than acne or irritation, which products should be paused, how to handle any topical steroid, and whether topical antibiotic therapy or an oral medicine is appropriate.
