What should you know about benign essential hypertension?

Essential means that tests have not found a separate condition causing the raised pressure. Benign is an older term and should not be taken to mean harmless. Blood pressure can strain blood vessels and organs quietly, even when you feel well. It is usually confirmed with repeated readings, home monitoring, or an ambulatory monitor rather than one isolated result.

Over time, uncontrolled hypertension can contribute to problems involving the heart, brain and kidneys.
