Benefits of salpingectomy

The expected benefit depends on why surgery is advised and whether one tube or both tubes will be removed.

Removing a damaged tube can resolve a tubal ectopic pregnancy or another problem confined to that tube. Taking out both tubes prevents eggs and sperm from meeting through the tubes, so it serves as permanent contraception. It may also reduce the chance of some cancers that can begin in the fallopian tubes, although it does not remove every ovarian or pelvic cancer risk.

A salpingectomy does not remove the ovaries. If the ovaries remain and function normally, they can continue making hormones and releasing eggs. Pregnancy without fertility treatment may remain possible after removal of one healthy-sided tube, but pregnancy cannot occur through the tubes after both are removed.

Confirm which tube or tubes are planned for removal and whether another operation will happen at the same time. Tell the surgical team about medicines, allergies, previous abdominal surgery, pregnancy plans, and any possibility of current pregnancy. Follow the team's instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, transport home, wound care, and activity after the procedure.

Before bilateral removal for contraception, discuss its irreversible nature and compare it with reversible methods. If future pregnancy matters, ask how the operation affects fertility and whether assisted reproduction may be relevant.

After surgery, seek urgent medical assessment for severe or worsening abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, fainting, trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, or a swollen painful leg. Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, repeated vomiting, increasing wound redness or discharge, difficulty passing urine, or pain that is not controlled by the advised medicine.

Ask what specific benefit the operation is intended to provide, whether one or both tubes will be removed, what alternatives fit your goals, and whether keyhole or open surgery is anticipated. Also ask what recovery signs are expected, which symptoms require urgent help, and how the plan could affect future fertility.
