Does getting chickenpox have any benefit?

Deliberately exposing a child or adult is unsafe because the severity of an infection cannot be predicted. The virus also remains in the body after recovery and can reactivate later as shingles. Vaccination is designed to build protection without requiring the full illness.

Chickenpox commonly presents with an itchy crop of fluid-filled spots along with fever, tiredness and reduced appetite. New spots can appear while older ones crust, and scratching can break the skin and allow a bacterial infection to develop.

Illness can be more severe in adults, pregnant people, newborns and people with weakened immunity. Complications can affect the skin, lungs, nervous system or hydration. A mild case in one person does not predict how another person's infection will behave.

Call ahead before attending a clinic so staff can limit exposure to other patients. Keep the person away from school, work and susceptible contacts until a clinician's or local health authority's isolation advice has been met. Avoid contact with pregnant people, newborns and anyone with weakened immunity.

Offer fluids, use loose clothing, keep nails short and reduce scratching with cool bathing or clinician-approved itch relief. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which fever medicine is appropriate; do not give aspirin to a child or teenager with chickenpox. Antiviral treatment may be considered for people at higher risk or with more severe illness.

Seek urgent medical advice for breathing difficulty, severe headache, unusual sleepiness, confusion, trouble walking, repeated vomiting, dehydration, a stiff neck, seizures, or skin that becomes very painful, hot, swollen or produces pus. A rash involving the eye also needs prompt assessment.

Contact a clinician early when chickenpox is suspected during pregnancy, in a newborn, in an adult, or in someone with weakened immunity. Medical advice is also needed after close exposure if a high-risk person is not known to be protected.

Ask whether the symptoms fit chickenpox, whether antiviral medicine is appropriate, which itch and fever remedies are safe, and how long contact with others should be avoided. If exposure has occurred without illness, ask promptly whether vaccination or another preventive measure is suitable.
