Benadryl for a dry cough: what to know

A dry cough produces little or no mucus and may feel scratchy or irritating. An antihistamine such as diphenhydramine may reduce allergy symptoms and post-nasal irritation, but its sedating effect can be more noticeable than its benefit. It may also dry secretions and leave the throat or mouth uncomfortable.

Dry cough also occurs with a Common Cold, Acute Bronchitis, Asthma or Acid Reflux. Allergic Rhinitis may cause throat irritation from drainage. Bronchiectasis can involve a changing cough pattern, while Bronchiolitis is a concern in young children with breathing symptoms. The cough symptom itself does not identify one cause.

Check the exact active ingredient and follow the pack directions. Do not take Benadryl with alcohol or another sedating medicine unless a clinician or pharmacist has advised this. Avoid driving if sleepy, and keep the product away from children. Warm fluids, humidified air and avoiding smoke may reduce throat irritation.

If the cough follows exposure to dust, pollen or a pet, reducing that exposure may help. Ask a pharmacist about a less-sedating allergy option when appropriate. Do not keep treating a recurring cough without reviewing its pattern and possible cause.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion or a child who is struggling to breathe. Arrange a clinical review for a cough that persists, worsens, repeatedly wakes you, comes with wheeze or follows a new medicine.

Ask whether the cough pattern fits allergy, reflux, asthma or infection, and whether Benadryl is suitable with your other medicines. Ask what symptom changes should prompt review and whether a different treatment would address the underlying cause.
