Benadryl cough formula: what to know

Products sold under a similar brand name may have different active ingredients. A cough formula may combine an antihistamine with a cough suppressant, expectorant or decongestant. The ingredients affect drowsiness, alertness, blood pressure and interactions with other medicines, so the product name alone is not enough to judge suitability.

A cough can accompany a Common Cold, Allergic Rhinitis or Acute Bronchitis. It can also be linked with Acid Reflux or Asthma. A cough lasting longer than expected, recurring at night or occurring with wheeze needs attention to its cause rather than repeated use of a combination syrup.

Avoid alcohol and take care with driving if drowsiness occurs.
