What should you know about being sick after eating?

Short answer
Being sick after eating can result from infection, food irritation, migraine or another digestive problem, so context matters.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanations
A single episode may follow overeating, spoiled food, alcohol, motion or a medication. Vomiting with diarrhoea, cramps or fever can occur with Food Poisoning or Gastroenteritis. Repeated episodes after fatty meals with upper-right abdominal pain may fit Gallstones, while severe upper-abdominal pain that spreads to the back needs assessment for Pancreatitis. Migraine can cause nausea and vomiting, sometimes with headache or light sensitivity. Children may develop vomiting with Rotavirus Infection. Vomiting with a stiff neck, severe headache or light sensitivity is a warning sign for Meningitis.
What you can do
Pause solid food briefly if it triggers more vomiting, then take small frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Once fluids stay down, try bland foods and return gradually to normal meals. Avoid alcohol and rich foods until you feel settled. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others if infection is possible. Record what you ate, when symptoms began, and whether pain, fever or diarrhoea appeared.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a stiff neck, confusion, fainting, severe headache, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down. Get prompt medical advice for blood in vomit, signs of dehydration such as very little urine or marked dizziness, repeated vomiting, or vomiting after a head injury. Babies, older adults and people with significant medical conditions can become dehydrated quickly.
