Being induced at 38 weeks: reasons and choices

Short answer

Induction at 38 weeks is offered when the maternity team considers planned birth safer than continuing the pregnancy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
The timing balances the reason for birth against the option of continuing pregnancy.
Starting method
The condition of the cervix helps determine how induction begins.
Choice
The team should explain benefits, risks, alternatives and what waiting could mean.

Why induction may be offered

The recommendation should be linked to your individual circumstances, such as a maternal health condition, concerns about the placenta or baby's wellbeing, or changes found during monitoring. Ask the team to explain the concern, what might happen if you wait, and which alternatives are reasonable.

How labour is started

A clinician first considers whether the cervix is soft, open and ready for labour. If it needs preparation, options may include a medicine placed in the vagina or taken by mouth, or a balloon catheter. Once the cervix is suitable, the waters may be broken. An oxytocin drip can then strengthen or establish contractions, with the baby's heartbeat and contraction pattern monitored as needed.

Preparing for the admission

Confirm when and where to arrive, whether you may eat beforehand, which regular medicines to take, and who can accompany you. Bring maternity notes, identification, comfortable clothing, chargers and supplies for you and the baby. Induction can involve waiting between assessments and treatments, so discuss pain-relief choices and how the unit handles changes in timing.

Consent remains an ongoing conversation. You can request an explanation before an examination or treatment, ask for time to consider options when clinically safe, and discuss what would prompt assisted birth or caesarean birth.

When to contact maternity triage

Do not wait for the induction appointment if the baby's movements are reduced or changed, your waters break, you have vaginal bleeding, or regular painful contractions begin. Contact maternity triage urgently for severe headache, visual disturbance, pain beneath the ribs, sudden marked swelling, chest pain, breathing difficulty, a seizure or feeling acutely unwell. Follow the unit's instructions if waters are coloured or have an unusual smell.

Questions that clarify the plan

Ask what specific finding supports delivery at 38 weeks, how your cervix will be assessed, which starting method is proposed, and what monitoring you and the baby will need. Also clarify the options if the first method does not establish labour and whether continued observation, another induction method or caesarean birth would then be discussed.

Questions people ask

Does an induction always begin with an oxytocin drip?

No. The cervix may first need preparation with medicine or a balloon. Oxytocin may be considered later to start or strengthen contractions.

Can an induction plan change after admission?

Yes. Cervical findings, contraction response and monitoring of you and the baby can alter the next recommended step. The team should explain any change.
