Beginning scalp ringworm treatment: what to expect

A clinician may examine the scalp and sometimes collect hairs or scale before selecting medicine. Treatment choice can depend on the likely fungus, age, other medicines, health conditions, and local prescribing practice. Complete the prescribed course unless the treating clinician changes it.

Scalp ringworm, also called tinea capitis, affects scalp skin and hair. Its presentation can include flaking, itch, broken hairs, black dots, tender areas, or patches of hair loss. It can spread between people through close contact and shared combs, hats, pillowcases, towels, or hair tools.

Medicated shampoo may lower fungal material on the scalp and help limit transmission, but it generally supports rather than replaces oral treatment. Hair often begins recovering after infection and inflammation settle, though regrowth is gradual.

Give or take the medicine exactly as directed and check the label for instructions about food, missed doses, and storage. Use any recommended shampoo on the schedule provided. Do not share antifungal tablets or use leftover medication, because the drug and dose must fit the person.

Separate combs, brushes, head coverings, bedding, and towels until a clinician advises otherwise. Clean hair tools, wash contacted fabrics, and tell the clinician if household members have scalp scale or hair loss. Pets with patchy fur also need veterinary assessment rather than human medicine.

Contact the prescriber promptly for a spreading painful swelling, pus, fever, increasing tenderness, or new areas of hair loss. A boggy inflamed lump can be a kerion and needs timely management to reduce the chance of lasting hair loss.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, blistering, or a rapidly spreading rash after medicine. Arrange follow-up if doses cannot be kept down, side effects are troublesome, symptoms worsen, or the scalp is not responding as expected.

Confirm how to take the antifungal, whether monitoring is appropriate, which interactions or side effects matter, and how to use the accompanying shampoo. Ask when school, nursery, work, close-contact sport, and shared hair care can safely resume under local guidance.
