Short answer
Beginning mastitis signs include a tender, swollen, or hot area of the breast, sometimes with redness, feverishness, aches, or sudden fatigue.

What early mastitis can mean
Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue. It may begin when milk is not draining comfortably, such as after a missed feed, pressure on the breast, or a change in feeding pattern. One area can feel firm and painful, and the skin may look red or warmer than the surrounding breast. Some people develop chills, body aches, or a raised temperature quickly. Breast inflammation can occur without infection, so symptoms alone do not show whether antibiotics are needed.
What to do now
Continue breastfeeding or expressing in a comfortable, usual pattern if you can; abrupt stopping may worsen fullness. Check that your baby’s position and attachment are comfortable, and avoid forceful massage or tight clothing. Rest, drink to thirst, and use a cool pack between feeds for swelling. A suitable pain or fever medicine may help if you can take it. Contact a clinician or lactation professional when symptoms are significant, worsening, or not easing.
When to seek care
Get same-day medical advice if you have feverishness, chills, marked weakness, spreading redness, or increasing pain. Seek urgent help if you feel seriously unwell, confused, faint, or unable to keep fluids down. A breast abscess can develop as a persistent, increasingly painful area or a lump that does not improve, and it needs examination. Breast pain and painful breastfeeding can have overlapping causes.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit mastitis, whether you need an examination or treatment, and how to protect milk supply while recovering. Mention your temperature, the exact breast area involved, feeding or pumping changes, nipple damage, and how quickly the symptoms appeared.
