Skin graft donor site before and after healing

The donor area may initially look raw and can sting or release light fluid beneath the dressing. Later it commonly becomes pink or a different shade from nearby skin. Colour, sensitivity and texture may continue to evolve after the surface has closed.

A split-thickness graft removes part of the skin depth, allowing remaining skin structures to help cover the donor wound. A full-thickness donor area is usually closed with stitches and therefore follows a more typical incision-healing pattern. The surgical team can tell you which type you have.

Fresh pinkness does not by itself show infection. More concerning patterns include redness that spreads beyond the wound, increasing heat, worsening pain, pus, an unpleasant smell or wound edges that separate. Photographs are useful for monitoring only when taken without removing a dressing against instructions.

Keep the original dressing in place for the period specified by the surgical team. If its outer surface becomes wet, loose, dirty or heavily stained, contact the service for advice instead of pulling away material that may be attached to healing skin. Take pain relief only as directed.

Once the wound is confirmed closed, care may shift toward gentle moisturising, reducing friction and shielding the new skin from sunlight. Do not apply antiseptics, adhesive products or scar treatments unless the team says they suit your wound. Follow activity advice when movement stretches the donor area.

Seek prompt advice for bleeding that soaks through and does not settle with the pressure method you were given, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, pus, spreading redness, a bad smell, escalating pain or a dressing that has unexpectedly detached. Urgent assessment is needed for heavy bleeding, faintness or severe uncontrolled pain.

Confirm the graft type, where the donor dressing should be changed, whether showering is allowed, and how to respond if fluid reaches the dressing edge. Ask when exercise, work clothing and scar care can resume, and obtain a direct contact route for wound concerns.
