Before and after keloid removal

The method should be chosen for the keloid's site, size, symptoms and previous treatment. Removal can exchange a bulky keloid for a flatter healing line, yet any new skin injury can stimulate excess scar tissue in a person prone to keloids.

A keloid extends beyond the boundary of the original injury and may feel firm, itchy, tender or tight. Baseline photographs should show its edges and height as well as colour. A flatter scar after treatment can remain darker, lighter or redder than nearby skin.

Early swelling, stitches, crusting or bruising should not be mistaken for recurrence. Regrowth is suggested by progressive firm thickening that continues beyond the healing wound. Because recurrence can begin gradually, scheduled checks matter even when the initial result looks satisfactory.

Use dressings and wound care exactly as instructed, and avoid stretching, scratching or picking the site. Once the surface has closed, the clinician may recommend silicone, pressure treatment, injections, laser treatment or another approach according to the location and response.

Attend planned follow-up rather than waiting until the scar is bulky again. Note changes in firmness, itch, pain and spread at the edges. Protect the healing area from sun exposure, and check before applying scar oils, acids or adhesive products that might irritate it.

Seek prompt advice if the wound opens, bleeding does not stop with gentle pressure, or pain, warmth, redness and swelling are worsening. Pus, an unpleasant smell, fever or red streaking can indicate infection and should be assessed.

Book an earlier scar review if a firm ridge is enlarging beyond the wound, itch or tenderness returns, or movement becomes restricted. A new or uncertain lump should be examined before it is assumed to be another keloid.

Ask whether the goal is symptom relief, flattening or improved movement, and how the method addresses recurrence. Clarify wound restrictions, the timing of additional scar therapy, signs that justify an earlier visit, and how future piercings, surgery or acne inflammation could affect your tendency to form raised scars.
