The immune reaction and scratching can outlast the original bite. Scratching may reopen the surface, deepen inflammation, and leave darker or lighter marks after the swelling fades. New lesions appearing after sleep may suggest that exposure has not stopped, although appearance alone cannot identify the insect.

Photograph the area in consistent lighting and note whether individual spots flatten, spread, blister, drain, or recur. This record helps distinguish slowly healing marks from genuinely new ones.

Wash gently, apply a cool compress, avoid picking, and keep fingernails short. Use a plain fragrance-free moisturiser if the skin is dry. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine or a topical corticosteroid suits your symptoms, medical history, age, and the body area involved.

Address the possible source at the same time by inspecting sleeping areas and arranging appropriate pest control. Treating the rash without ending exposure may not prevent additional bites.

Arrange a medical assessment if the spots keep worsening, repeatedly return without a clear exposure, disrupt sleep, or have not begun to settle. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, spreading redness, pus, fever, or red streaks, which can accompany infection.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. These symptoms can signal a severe allergic reaction regardless of which insect caused the bite.

Ask whether the pattern fits bites or another inflammatory skin condition, whether broken skin looks infected, and which itch treatment is suitable for the affected site. Mention new medicines, household contacts with similar marks, recent travel, pets, and any pest-control findings.
