Where do bed bug bites appear?

Marks can occur elsewhere when clothing shifts or is loose. Their position reflects access to skin and sleeping posture, so one person may have lesions on several separate body areas.

Bites may sit in a line, a loose cluster, or an irregular scatter. This arrangement can raise suspicion when it appears after sleep, but it is not unique to bed bugs and does not identify the insect on its own.

Fleas more often reach lower legs, while mosquitoes can affect any uncovered site, yet these patterns overlap. Contact dermatitis may follow the shape of clothing or a product exposure, and scabies favours particular folds and spaces between fingers. Environmental clues remain important.

Map new marks with dated photographs and record where you slept, which skin was uncovered, and whether another household member is affected. Do not scratch to test the area; clean it gently and use a cool compress for discomfort.

Inspect mattress piping, the bed frame, headboard joints, bedside furniture, and nearby cracks for insects, cast skins, eggs, or dark spotting. Avoid carrying unbagged bedding into other rooms because this can spread hidden insects.

Seek urgent assessment for swelling around the eye that affects vision, extensive facial swelling, or a painful rash close to the eye. Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly escalating widespread symptoms.

Medical review is also appropriate when any site becomes hot, increasingly tender, swollen, or produces pus, or when fever or red streaking appears. Rashes involving the mouth, genitals, palms, or soles may point to another diagnosis and deserve direct examination.

Ask whether the body distribution suggests another cause, what environmental evidence would support bed bugs, and how to treat sensitive areas such as the face. Show photographs taken before the pattern changed and mention travel, guests, pets, or recently acquired furniture.
