Pause very close shaving over irritated skin, use a clean trimmer, and avoid sharing razors or towels. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or hair-growth medicines until the cause is clearer: these treatments address different problems, and steroid use can mask or worsen some infections. A clinician may inspect the hairs and skin closely and, when infection is suspected, collect a small sample.

Arrange a dermatology or primary-care appointment if a blank spot is new, enlarging, recurring, appearing elsewhere, or accompanied by scale or broken hairs. Earlier assessment matters when the skin looks shiny or scarred because damaged follicles may not recover normally.

Seek prompt care for a painful swollen area, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or feeling unwell. These features can signal an infection that needs examination and targeted treatment.
