BB glow for melasma: why caution matters

A more even appearance immediately afterward may come from surface tint, hydration or swelling. It does not show that the biological tendency to produce excess pigment has been controlled.

Melasma commonly presents as symmetrical brown or grey-brown facial patches. Light, heat, hormones and inflammation can influence the pigment-producing cells, so repeated irritation may make patches darker or less even.

BB glow is a marketing label rather than a single defined medicine. It often pairs microneedling with a tinted or brightening serum, but the ingredients, sterility and depth can differ. Colour placed into disrupted skin may fade unevenly or complicate later assessment.

Have facial patches diagnosed before an invasive cosmetic service, especially if they are new, changing, itchy or one-sided. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade and avoidance of unnecessary heat or irritation help reduce triggers while a clinician selects suitable pigment care.

Ask whether topical treatment, a carefully chosen chemical peel, skin-brightening treatment or laser toning fits your skin type and melasma pattern. Procedures need conservative settings and follow-up because inflammation itself can leave darker marks.

Seek prompt assessment after BB glow for increasing pain, warmth, pus, blistering, spreading redness, fever or marked swelling. A rapidly developing rash or facial swelling after serum exposure may indicate an allergic reaction; breathing difficulty requires emergency help.

Book a dermatology visit if darkening continues, new pale or dark spots appear, or a patch has an irregular border, surface change, bleeding or a pattern unlike your usual melasma.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, which triggers seem relevant, how irritation will be minimised, what result is realistic without camouflage, and what the recovery plan is if pigmentation deepens.
