Nodular basal cell carcinoma explained

Its surface may show fine blood vessels, form a central sore, crust or bleed. Appearance alone cannot confirm the subtype, so a dermatologist usually takes a skin sample for examination.

Nodular refers to the way the tumour grows in rounded nests within the skin. It is a pathology description, not a statement that the cancer has spread elsewhere. The report may also mention additional growth patterns, margin involvement or depth, each of which helps the clinician judge treatment.

These tumours often occur on sun-exposed areas, including the head and neck, but they can occur elsewhere. Basal cell carcinoma commonly presents with a persistent bump or sore; a skin lump by itself does not establish this diagnosis because benign and other cancerous lesions can look similar.

Have the lesion examined and biopsied if this has not already happened. For a confirmed nodular tumour, surgery is often considered because it allows removal and examination of the edges. Mohs surgery may be discussed for certain facial sites, poorly defined borders, recurrent tumours or situations where tissue preservation is especially valuable.

Other methods may fit selected circumstances, but superficial skin medicines are not automatically suitable for a nodular growth. Review the pathology and treatment rationale with your dermatologist, then follow the wound-care and surveillance plan provided.

Request a prompt skin check for a bump that persists, repeatedly crusts or bleeds, or slowly enlarges. Seek faster help for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, signs of infection around an open area, rapid enlargement, or a lesion close to the eye that affects vision or eyelid movement.

Ask whether the tumour is purely nodular or mixed, if the biopsy reaches its deepest part, how the location affects margin control, what repair may be required and which scar changes merit reassessment.
