What should you know about bartholin gland antibiotics?

A Bartholin gland is located on each side of the vaginal opening. A blocked duct can create a fluid-filled cyst. When bacteria enter that area, the cyst may become an abscess, producing a tender swelling that can make sitting, walking or sexual activity uncomfortable.

Antibiotics are not automatically needed for every cyst. A clinician may recommend them when there is cellulitis, fever, spreading redness, recurrent infection, a weakened immune system or a possible sexually transmitted infection. The choice depends on the examination and relevant medical history. If pus is enclosed, opening and draining the collection may provide the treatment it needs.

Book an appointment for a new, painful or enlarging lump. A warm sitz bath may ease discomfort while you arrange care, but do not puncture or press the swelling. Use simple pain relief only if it is suitable for you and follow the product directions.

Tell the clinician about medicine allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding and conditions affecting immunity. If an antibiotic is prescribed, take it at the stated times and ask what to do if you vomit or miss a dose. Do not share it with another person or save remaining tablets for a future episode.

Get urgent help for severe or quickly worsening pain, rapidly spreading redness, fever with shaking chills, confusion, faintness or trouble passing urine. Contact the treating clinician if the swelling is not settling, symptoms worsen after starting medicine, or side effects such as facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a widespread blistering rash occur.

Ask what caused the swelling, whether it is an abscess, whether drainage or a small catheter is appropriate, how long improvement should take, whether infection testing is needed and how recurrence can be managed.
