Bartholin cyst treatment: an English guide with Tagalog terms

A small cyst without troublesome symptoms may only need monitoring and warm-water soaks. A painful abscess may need drainage, and antibiotics may be used when a clinician identifies infection that requires them. “Paggamot” means treatment, while “bukol” means lump.

A Bartholin cyst develops when a small duct near the vaginal opening is blocked and fluid collects. If infection produces a pus-filled, tender swelling, it is called an abscess. In Tagalog, you can describe pain as “masakit,” swelling as “pamamaga,” and pus as “nana.”

Clinical options can include observation, a small drainage opening with a catheter, or marsupialisation for selected cysts or abscesses. Marsupialisation keeps a drainage opening from sealing immediately. The choice is based on the examination, current symptoms, previous episodes, and your preferences.

For mild discomfort, warm baths or compresses may help. Keep the area gently clean, avoid tight clothing, and never try to cut or squeeze the lump. If it drains by itself, use a clean pad, wash your hands before and after touching the area, and arrange care if pain or swelling continues.

Tell the clinician where the lump is, when it started, whether it has recurred, and whether sitting, walking, sex, or urination hurts. You may request a professional medical interpreter; a relative should not have to translate private details unless that is your informed preference.

Get urgent medical help for mabilis na paglaki (rapid enlargement), matinding sakit (severe pain), lagnat (fever), nana (pus), spreading redness, or feeling generally unwell. Prompt assessment is also appropriate if swelling makes it hard to sit, walk, or pass urine.

Seek emergency care if you feel faint, confused, or severely ill. Do not delay because of language concerns; tell the service which language you understand best and ask what interpretation support is available.
