Where a Bartholin cyst is located

It reflects fluid trapped in the duct of a Bartholin gland. The lump is generally under the skin rather than inside the vaginal canal, although swelling can bulge toward the entrance and make its exact position hard to judge.

A small, uninfected cyst may feel like a soft or firm bump on one side and cause little discomfort. A larger or infected cyst can distort the nearby labial tissue and become painful with walking, sitting, sexual activity, or pressure from clothing.

A lump higher on the vulva, directly around the urethra, deep within the vagina, or on the outer hair-bearing skin may have another explanation. Location alone cannot establish a diagnosis; skin cysts, inflamed follicles, and other vulval conditions can resemble one another.

Use clean hands and a mirror if you want to identify which side is swollen, but do not repeatedly press or attempt to drain the lump. Record whether it is changing in size, becoming warmer, producing discharge, or interfering with movement.

Warm sitz baths may ease mild tenderness. Choose loose, breathable clothing and avoid products that sting the vulval skin. If you cannot tell where the lump begins, a clinician can examine the vulva and vaginal entrance while protecting your comfort and privacy.

Prompt assessment is needed for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever, chills, spreading redness, difficulty urinating, or swelling that increases quickly. These features can accompany an abscess and may require drainage or other treatment.

Have any new, persistent, recurring, hard, irregular, or unexplained vulval lump examined, particularly when its location does not fit the usual gland area. Seek urgent help if you feel faint or seriously unwell.

You might ask which structure the lump arises from, whether it appears infected, and whether examination alone is enough to identify it. Also ask what home care is suitable and whether drainage is appropriate if it remains painful or returns.
