Bartholin cyst with no visible head

Unlike a surface spot, it does not need to develop a white tip before it can settle or be treated. Trying to create an opening yourself risks bleeding, tissue damage and infection.

Fluid can collect behind a blocked Bartholin duct near one side of the vaginal entrance. The overlying vulval surface may stay smooth and skin-coloured. If bacteria infect the trapped fluid, pus and pressure can build deeper in the tissue without forming a visible point.

Appearance alone cannot show whether infection is present. Increasing tenderness, warmth, redness, swelling and feeling unwell are more useful reasons to seek assessment.

Use comfortably warm shallow baths to ease pressure, then dry the area gently. Reduce friction from tight trousers, cycling or prolonged sitting if these aggravate soreness. Leave the surface intact rather than using needles, blades or acne products.

If the cyst opens spontaneously, let fluid escape without forcing it. Wash with water, use a clean pad and monitor whether pain and swelling improve. Persistent fullness after drainage deserves a clinical check.

Seek timely medical care for intense or rising pain, rapidly enlarging swelling, fever, pus, spreading redness, or difficulty walking, sitting or urinating. These features can accompany a deeper abscess that may need drainage.

Have a persistent, recurrent or newly appearing vulval lump examined even when it causes no discomfort. The clinician can confirm its location and discuss whether monitoring or a procedure is suitable.

Ask whether the swelling appears infected, whether it is ready or appropriate to drain, and how discomfort can be managed meanwhile. If episodes recur, ask which procedure can keep the duct open and what aftercare it involves.
