Can an image identify a Bartholin cyst?

Short answer

A photograph may show a lump near the vaginal opening, but an image alone cannot confirm a Bartholin cyst.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can a Bartholin cyst be recognised from an image?

Its appearance varies with size, skin tone, irritation, and infection. Diagnosis usually depends on the exact location, how the swelling feels, associated symptoms, and an in-person examination.

Appearance and location

A Bartholin cyst can present as swelling on one side near the lower part of the vaginal opening. The overlying skin may look unchanged when the cyst is not infected. An abscess may appear more swollen, red, or tense and is often painful, but visual features cannot reliably separate it from other vulval lumps.

Cysts in the skin, inflamed hair follicles, and other conditions can resemble one another in a photograph. A picture also cannot show firmness, depth, warmth, or tenderness, which are useful clinical details.

Safe next steps

Do not compare intimate images as a substitute for assessment or attempt to puncture the swelling. Note when it appeared, whether it is growing, and whether walking, sitting, sex, or urination is uncomfortable. A warm bath may ease mild discomfort while you arrange care if needed.

If you seek remote advice, use only a secure service that specifically accepts clinical images. You may still need an examination because a clinician must check the lump's position and texture before recommending treatment.

Changes that need medical care

Get prompt help if swelling grows quickly, pain becomes severe, redness spreads, pus or an unpleasant-smelling discharge appears, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Such changes can occur with an abscess and should be assessed rather than monitored through photographs.

Book a clinical review for a new lump that persists, returns, feels hard or fixed, bleeds, causes skin changes, or first appears after menopause.

Preparing for your appointment

Ask what features support the diagnosis, whether infection is present, and whether observation, drainage, or another procedure is appropriate. Tell the clinician about recent changes, drainage, fever, previous lumps in the same place, and any medicines or allergies that could affect care.

Questions people ask

What colour is a Bartholin cyst?

An uninfected cyst may have normal-looking skin over it, while irritation or infection can cause redness. Colour varies and does not establish the diagnosis.

Can a doctor diagnose it from my photo?

A photo may support an initial discussion, but an examination is often needed to confirm the location and feel of the lump and choose appropriate care.
