Bartholin cyst healing: what to expect

The area may remain tender after spontaneous drainage or a procedure. What matters is the overall trend and whether new warning signs appear.

After a cyst opens, fluid release may quickly reduce the tight feeling. Mild soreness, a small amount of discharge, and local swelling can linger while the opening and surrounding tissue settle. After marsupialisation, the edges are intentionally arranged to allow continued drainage rather than sealing immediately.

A steady reduction in discomfort and easier sitting or walking are encouraging. A lump may not vanish at once, so compare changes over time instead of pressing it repeatedly.

Follow the wound-care instructions given after any procedure. Wash gently with water, pat dry, change pads when damp, and use loose underwear to reduce rubbing. A warm shallow bath may soothe the area if your treating clinician has not advised against it.

Do not pull at stitches, seal the opening with creams, or resume activities that cause pain. Take prescribed medicines as directed. If the cyst drained by itself, arrange assessment when pain remains, the cavity refills, or you are unsure that drainage has finished.

Get prompt help for renewed or escalating pain, a rapidly enlarging swelling, fever, chills, spreading redness, foul-smelling discharge, heavy bleeding, or difficulty passing urine. These are not expected signs of uncomplicated improvement.

Contact the treating service if a wound opens unexpectedly, packing or a small drainage tube comes out earlier than planned, or the lump repeatedly fills. Follow their specific instructions because care differs according to the procedure used.

Ask what drainage and tenderness are expected for your treatment, how to clean around stitches or a catheter, and when sexual activity, exercise, swimming, or tampon use can resume. Confirm whom to contact if swelling returns outside clinic hours.
