Can a Bartholin cyst go away on its own?

A Bartholin cyst forms when the opening of a gland near the vaginal entrance becomes blocked and fluid collects. A small cyst may cause little discomfort. If bacteria infect the trapped fluid, an abscess can develop, often bringing increasing tenderness, warmth, redness, or swelling. The lump can also return if the opening closes again after it drains.

Soaking the area in comfortably warm water several times through the day may encourage natural drainage and ease pressure. Keep the vulva clean and dry, wear loose breathable underwear, and avoid squeezing, piercing, or trying to drain the lump yourself. If it opens, allow fluid to drain, use a clean pad, wash gently, and arrange care if pain or swelling does not improve.

Seek prompt assessment if the lump becomes very painful, rapidly enlarges, drains foul-smelling fluid, or makes sitting or walking difficult. Fever, chills, feeling unwell, or redness spreading into nearby skin can signal infection and need urgent care. A clinician should also examine a new vulval lump after menopause or any lump that remains, recurs, or has an uncertain cause.

Ask whether the swelling looks like a simple cyst or an abscess, whether a swab or examination is appropriate, and what treatment fits its size and symptoms. If it has returned, discuss whether creating a lasting drainage opening could reduce further blockage and what aftercare that procedure involves.
