Can a Bartholin cyst go away on its own?

The swelling may shrink if the blocked duct reopens and trapped fluid escapes. A cyst that stays comfortable and does not interfere with daily activities can often be observed. An infected, very painful swelling is more consistent with an abscess and is less suitable for watchful waiting.

A resolving cyst becomes less prominent and less tender. It may release clear, cloudy, or slightly blood-stained fluid if it opens. Pressure can ease after drainage, although the duct may close again and allow fluid to reaccumulate.

Not every lump beside the vaginal opening is a Bartholin cyst. Arrange an examination when the lump is new, persistent, firm, changing, or in an unexpected location, even if it is not painful. Diagnosis should come from the clinical features rather than an assumption based on position alone.

Warm sitz baths or a warm compress can ease discomfort and may encourage the duct to drain. Keep the outer area gently clean, pat it dry, and wear loose, breathable clothing. If fluid appears, use an unscented pad and change it when damp.

Never try to pop, lance, or squeeze the cyst. Doing so can injure vulval tissue and introduce infection. Use pain medicine only when it is normally safe for you, and check with a pharmacist or clinician if pregnancy, allergies, other medicines, or health conditions affect your choices.

If the lump does not settle, keeps returning, or disrupts movement or intimacy, schedule a clinical review. Treatment can drain the cyst and help prevent the opening from sealing too quickly; marsupialisation is one option a gynaecologist may discuss.

Get prompt medical care for increasing or severe pain, rapid enlargement, warmth, spreading redness, pus, foul-smelling drainage, fever, chills, difficulty sitting or walking, or feeling unwell. These signs can occur when a cyst becomes an abscess and may require drainage or antibiotics.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, faintness, or sudden extreme pain. Contact a clinician earlier if your immune system is weakened, diabetes is poorly controlled, or you are pregnant, because these circumstances can change how suspected infection and medicines are managed.
