When a Bartholin cyst bursts on its own

Spontaneous drainage may release clear, cloudy, blood-stained, or pus-like fluid and can reduce pressure quickly. It does not necessarily mean the blocked duct is fully open or that an infection has cleared, so monitor how the area feels over the following days.

The lump may shrink as fluid leaves, while mild tenderness and drainage can continue during healing. If the surface seals while fluid remains underneath, swelling may return. Increasing pain, heat, redness, thick discharge, or an unpleasant smell suggests ongoing inflammation or infection rather than uncomplicated healing.

A Bartholin abscess is an infected collection and can still need treatment after it opens. A clinician may examine the cavity, assess whether drainage is adequate, and decide if a procedure or antibiotics are appropriate for the findings.

Rinse the outer vulval area with warm water and pat it dry rather than rubbing. A warm sitz bath may soothe the tissue and allow drainage to continue. Wear breathable underwear and place an unscented pad in it if needed, changing the pad when wet.

Leave the opening alone: do not press the lump, insert cotton buds, or attempt to drain it with a needle. Avoid sex and other friction until drainage has stopped and the area is comfortable. Seek clinical advice if symptoms are not steadily improving or if cysts have returned before.

Arrange prompt medical care for fever, chills, spreading redness, worsening or severe pain, foul-smelling pus, a rapidly enlarging lump, difficulty walking or sitting, or feeling generally unwell. These can signal an abscess that has not drained adequately or an infection extending into nearby tissue.

Heavy or continuing bleeding, faintness, or sudden intense pain warrants urgent help. Early contact is also sensible when your immune system is weakened, diabetes is poorly controlled, or pregnancy affects which medicines and procedures are suitable.

You might ask whether the cyst has drained completely, whether the discharge suggests infection, and when normal activities can resume. If this is a repeated problem, ask how to keep the duct open and whether marsupialisation or another drainage method fits your circumstances.
