What should you know about a barking seal cough sound?

A dry, barking quality can occur when the voice box or nearby airway becomes swollen. A viral illness such as Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis may irritate the breathing passages. Allergic Rhinitis, Asthma, or Acid Reflux can also contribute to repeated coughing, although the sound alone cannot identify a cause. Bronchiolitis is another consideration in young children, particularly when fast breathing or feeding difficulty accompanies the cough.

Keep the person upright and calm, because crying and agitation can make noisy breathing feel worse. Offer small, frequent drinks if swallowing is comfortable. Avoid smoke, strong scents, and over-the-counter cough medicines unless a clinician has recommended a product for that person. Note when the cough began, whether there is fever, and whether a harsh noise occurs while breathing in.

Seek emergency help for struggling to breathe, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, marked drowsiness, drooling with difficulty swallowing, or a harsh breathing noise that continues while resting. Arrange prompt medical assessment if the cough is worsening, follows choking, or is paired with chest pain, dehydration, or persistent fever. A cough lasting beyond the expected illness should be reviewed, including when it becomes a Chronic Cough.
